The Big Bike Event was devised in an effort to drive awareness for our massive 100 Bike Giveaway campaign and to help us continue recycling bikes. It is the first of it’s kind in York and we are uniquely positioned to really have a positive impact on people’s lives by providing them with an affordable and sustainable method of transportation. All while educating them on maintaining their new recycled bike to help drive a sense of confidence forward and hopefully inspire the next generation of bicycle enthusiasts.
The £1 sale was a roaring success with us having to fend people off until 9am when it officially started, there were definitely bargains had by all! In true tradition, if the items hadn’t gone by 3pm, it was arranged for them to be given away! That’s right, FREE! We were swarmed and people flocked from all over York not only to grab themselves a bargain but also a cheeky burger from the grill too!
From bottles of bubbly to family days out, there were lots of winners at the Tombola tent on Saturday’s Big Bike Event. Pictured above is one winner who was so happy with their new teddy that we just had to get a quick snap!
A huge thank you to everyone who both donated us prizes (we couldn’t have made it as special without you all!) and those who got involved by buying tickets and playing the game on the day! We were so proud of the turn out and seeing everyone smiling and loving their prizes!
The Snappy Trust in York was down for the day as hey were the first, official recipients of our recycled bikes. We come across so many bikes that we would love to have the man power to donate many more because we see how having a bike can revolutionise someones life. Being able to get to work, to school, to be able to socialise and keep fit!
We see so many benefits to cycling and we are so happy that Snappy Trust came down to be the first in line to receive their bikes!
There was so much going on we couldn’t possibly cover it all but we wanted to do a special mention and thank you to Recycle York, who hosted workshops throughout the day and provided our guests with some knowledge that they will be able to take home and use in the future and continue our efforts to continue recycling bikes.
There were people who brought their bikes to get their hands dirty and fix their own bikes, and others attended to watch an in-depth look at what is what on a bike.
We had crafty activities going on all day in the arts and crafts tent and the toddler zone was an absolute blast! You needed buckets of energy to be buzzing about in there, that’s for sure!!
The launch of this campaign was very important to us and we couldn’t be happier or more proud of the team that helped us pull this together. From the hands on staff on the ground, to the prize-givers for the Tombola, YO1 Radio coming down for the day, Snappy Trust being there and so much more! We can’t begin to thank everyone who was involved but you all know who you are!
Next year, the Big Bike Event will be back with plans already in the pipeline to make it bigger and better. We understand the importance of having a community of people around you to support you and tell you that it IS possible to get out there and step outside your comfort zone and learn new things. Remember, this is just the beginning of the campaign, we have already got the next recipients lined up and ready!
We appreciate the support and feedback provided by our valued members of The Recycle Project’s community. As always, we encourage you to reach out to us and get in touch if you have any feedback or would like to support us and get involved with our 100 bike giveaway campaign, proudly brought to you by Recycle York, YO1 Radio and funded by The National Lottery Community fund.
Please note: All events and activities are FREE!!!
